Description
Headline
Stilt-legged fly (Neria femoralis), NL: spillebeenvlieg
Caption
The stilt-legged fly is named after the characteristically long legs. Stilt-legged flies are are harmless. The middle and back pairs of legs are exceptionally long and thin, while the front pair of legs are much shorter. They often walk around with the front pair of legs held forward, resembling antennae and such looking like small wasps.

As larvae, most stilt-legged flies eat decaying materials, such as rotting plant materials, decaying fungi, or manure. Adults are either predatory on small insects or are attracted to excrement or decaying fruit.
